The Lower North Shore
The Lower North Shore is a wild stretch of coastline dotted with islands, passages, and sandy beaches. The Gulf of St. Lawrence resembles the ocean here, with whales, seabirds and the occasional iceberg that drifts down from Greenland. Fast-flowing salmon rivers cross boulder fields and tundra. The natural resources of this seemingly barren land have attracted many people for thousands of years, from the ancient Maritime Archaic Indians to today’s French, English and Innu-speaking inhabitants. Today, some 5,000 residents of the Lower North Shore make this isolated and grandiose landscape our home. They call it the Coast, and refer to themselves as Coasters.

Suggested material but not mandatory
- 1 tent for your team (light and waterproof). Please note that you will have the possibility to sleep in a common room so you don’t need your tent.
Important notes for nautical sections:
Our testers are very happy with the water sections of the course. The only thing is that the water is very cold (maximum 4° Celsius). Therefore, we strongly suggest the following material:
- Neoprene hat or Polar hat
- Neoprene gloves or mits
- Good dry suit or Wet-suit+ Dry Top. The clothing will be very important in the success of the race. If you don’t have good clothes, you will not get through the raid.
- You must have your 15 meters rope not only for security but also to tight your boat to a tree at some transitions. The tides are very strong in Lower North Shore and you don’t want to lose your boat half way through the race!
- A good water pump to empty your kayaks
- For more comfort and for your kayak prtotection, we recommend putting a blue foam mattress at the bottom of your kayak. This protects the boat and keeps you warm by isolating the boat.
The organization will provide the teams with the following:
The boats and the climbing gear will be provided by the organization.
The kayaks
 |
 |
These kayaks will be use for the Coast Raid |
All the teams will use the same double kayak Advanced Elements AdvancedFrametm. Every duo will have one double kayak, two skirts and a reparation kit. The teams will keep the same kayak for the entire race so it is very important to take care of it and to follow the instructions for the inflation.
Our team tested these kayaks in all kind of conditions and we can tell you they respond very well. These are the perfect boats for adventure racers.
